Australia is determined to restore the solemnity of war graves in Gaza, which have been devastated by the Israeli army's bulldozing operations. The Australian government has pledged to repair the graves of over 250 Australian soldiers buried at the Commonwealth war cemetery in Gaza, the majority of whom served in the First World War. However, the ongoing conflict in the occupied territory poses a significant challenge, as it may take months or even years for authorities to access the cemetery and carry out the necessary repairs. The damage, particularly in the southern corner of the cemetery, is extensive, with satellite imagery and witness accounts revealing rows of gravestones removed and soil disturbed. The Tuffah area of Gaza City, where the cemetery is located, has been shelled throughout the current conflict, but the most severe damage has occurred within the last year due to military earthmoving activities. The Office of Australian War Graves is committed to restoring all affected graves, but the immediate priority is humanitarian efforts, leaving the full reconstruction of the cemetery to take some time. The situation is particularly distressing for the families of those who rest in Gaza and for all Australians who value their commemorative traditions. The national president of the Returned & Services League of Australia, Peter Tinley, has assured that the organization will continue to monitor the situation and work with relevant authorities to ensure the graves are restored and properly maintained once access is possible. However, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has defended its actions, claiming that it was forced to take defensive measures during military operations, including the identification and dismantling of underground terrorist infrastructure within the cemetery. The military historian Prof. Peter Stanley emphasizes that Australians have not forgotten their soldiers' service in the Middle East and that the desecration of graves is a serious consequence of the conflict. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission, responsible for maintaining Commonwealth war graves worldwide, expresses deep concern over the extensive damage to the Gaza cemetery, which risks further destruction of graves due to the ongoing conflict. The commission acknowledges the irony of the situation, where the Israelis are demanding the return of hostages' remains while bulldozing the graves of Commonwealth soldiers.
