The stage is set for an epic showdown at the 2026 Winter Olympics! Canada's women's hockey team is gearing up to take on the mighty United States, and the anticipation is palpable.
The Road to Glory:
Hockey Canada, alongside the Canadian Olympic Committee, has unveiled a formidable roster of 23 players for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games. Among them, 16 are Olympic gold medalists from the Beijing triumph, a testament to Canada's dominance in the sport.
A Star-Studded Lineup:
The team boasts a well-rounded composition, featuring:
- Goaltenders: Ann-Renée Desbiens, Emerance Maschmeyer, and Kayle Osborne—a trio of talented netminders.
- Defence: Erin Ambrose, Renata Fast, Sophie Jaques, Jocelyne Larocque, Ella Shelton, Kati Tabin, and Claire Thompson—a solid defensive core.
- Forwards: Emily Clark, Sarah Fillier, Jenn Gardiner, Julia Gosling, Brianne Jenner, Emma Maltais, Sarah Nurse, Kristin O'Neill, Marie-Philip Poulin, Natalie Spooner, Laura Stacey, Blayre Turnbull, and Daryl Watts—a dynamic and experienced group of attackers.
But here's where it gets exciting—seven players are set to make their Olympic debut, including Gardiner, Gosling, Jaques, O'Neill, Osborne, Tabin, and Watts. This blend of seasoned veterans and fresh talent promises a thrilling performance.
The Selection Process:
The team was meticulously chosen by general manager Gina Kingsbury, head coach Troy Ryan, and senior manager of player development and scouting, Cherie Piper. Assistant coaches Kori Cheverie, Caroline Ouellette, and Britni Smith, along with goaltending consultant Brad Kirkwood, also played a crucial role. The executive committee, including Hockey Canada's president and CEO, Katherine Henderson, provided invaluable support.
The selection process involved evaluating players through training camps, the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) season, collegiate games, and the highly anticipated Rivalry Series against the United States.
"Selecting the final roster is always a challenging task," said Kingsbury. "We started with 30 athletes, ensuring a thorough evaluation process. Each decision was carefully made, and we believe we've chosen a group that embodies the spirit and passion of Canadian hockey."
A Legacy of Excellence:
Canada's women's hockey team has an impressive track record, with four consecutive Olympic gold medals (2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014) and additional silver medals in 1998 and 2018. At the 2022 Beijing Olympics, they captured their fifth gold, and at the 2025 IIHF Women's World Championship, they earned silver.
Marie-Philip Poulin, a five-time Olympian, expressed her excitement: "Wearing the Maple Leaf is an honor, and being selected for my fifth Olympics is a dream come true. We aim to inspire young girls, and representing Canada is a privilege we cherish."
The Upcoming Battle:
In Milan, the women's hockey tournament will take place from February 5th to 19th at the Milano Rho Arena and Milan Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena. Canada is grouped with Czechia, Finland, Switzerland, and the United States in Group A.
Canada's opening match against Finland on February 5th will be a highly anticipated clash. They will then face Switzerland on the 7th and Czechia on the 9th before the much-awaited showdown with the United States on February 10th.
Team Canada's chef de mission, Jennifer Heil, praised the team's caliber: "Our women's hockey team represents the pinnacle of the sport in Canada. They embody the spirit of a generation that believes in its abilities. Each player has a support network, and we're grateful for the communities that have contributed to their success."

As the team prepares for Milan, the excitement builds. The selection process, rigorous and thorough, ensures Canada fields a competitive team. But will this be enough to secure another gold medal? Only time will tell.
