Measles Outbreak in Mexico: PAHO's Urgent Call for Vaccination (2026)

Measles Outbreak: Mexico Takes the Lead as PAHO Sounds Alarm

A concerning health crisis is unfolding in the Americas, with Mexico at the epicenter. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has issued a dire warning, urging immediate action to combat a measles outbreak that is rapidly spreading across the region. But here's the alarming part: Mexico has reported the highest number of cases, and the situation is far from contained.

PAHO's recent epidemiological alert shines a light on the urgency of the matter. Canada's loss of measles-free status in November 2025 has set off alarm bells, and the United States and Mexico are now at risk of following suit. Despite efforts to contain the outbreaks, the Trump administration's withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) in January 2026 has complicated matters, as PAHO is a subsidiary agency.

The numbers are startling. In just the first three weeks of 2026, PAHO confirmed a staggering 1,031 new measles cases across seven countries, a 43-fold increase compared to the same period in 2025. Mexico tops the list with 740 cases, while the United States and Canada trail with 171 and 67 cases, respectively. And this is the part most people miss: the vast majority (78%) of these cases involve unvaccinated individuals.

The Mexican state of Jalisco has become a hotspot, recording the highest incidence rate in the country this year, after Chihuahua and Texas experienced outbreaks in 2025. In the US, South Carolina is now a growing concern. In response, Mexican authorities are taking proactive measures, urging the public to get vaccinated and setting up mobile clinics in busy areas.

PAHO's alert comes after a year of rising measles cases, the highest in half a decade. The global resurgence of measles, coupled with immunization gaps, has fueled this crisis. Interestingly, while adolescents and young adults make up the bulk of cases, the highest incidence rates are among infants under one year old, emphasizing the urgency of second-dose vaccinations.

Regional vaccination coverage is a cause for concern, with only a third of countries reaching the 95% threshold for the first dose and a mere 20% achieving this for the second dose.

As the clock ticks towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by North American nations, the pressure to control this outbreak intensifies. The question remains: can the region rally together to tackle this health emergency before it escalates further?
