A piece of Slough's history is about to transform! The Queensmere shopping centre, a familiar landmark in Slough, Berkshire, has shut its doors, paving the way for a significant makeover. This closure marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the town centre, following its acquisition by Berkeley Homes last year, who also own the adjacent Observatory shopping centre. They envision a comprehensive regeneration project.
What does this entail? Well, the plan includes the development of approximately 1,600 homes, alongside retail and leisure spaces on the ground floors. The aim is to revitalize the area and create a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike. But here's where it gets interesting...
Queensmere's story began in the 1970s, becoming a central part of Slough's high street for many years. It initially opened its doors in 1973. However, by the 1980s, it started to show its age. A refurbishment project in 1997, completed in 1999, breathed new life into the shopping centre, attracting major stores and becoming a popular destination.
Did you know? Underneath the shopping centre, there was even an underground pub called the Kingfisher! Many shoppers in later years were completely unaware they were walking above it.
Residents reminisce about the mall, with its iconic 1970s white and beige tiles, as a nostalgic reminder of the past. For some, like Julia Thurauf, it evokes fond memories of youthful outings. Hamza Ghose remembers it as the heart of the high street, a lively place where you could find everything you needed.
Caroline Crowe, from Berkeley Homes, points out a wider trend: the decline of large shopping centres and town centres across the UK. While Queensmere now stands silent, the Observatory remains open, continuing to serve the community.
