In a bold move aimed at enhancing their defensive capabilities, the Boston Red Sox have officially signed veteran infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa to a one-year deal. Kiner-Falefa brings a wealth of experience to the Red Sox infield, having played a total of 450 games at shortstop, 234 at third base—where he earned the prestigious Gold Glove Award in 2020—and 90 at second base throughout his eight-year career with teams such as the Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, and Pittsburgh Pirates. His defensive prowess is evidenced by impressive metrics: he has accumulated 12 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) over 573.2 innings at second base, 29 DRS in 1,818 innings at third, and 32 DRS spread across 3,838 innings at shortstop.
While Trevor Story currently holds the position of starting shortstop for the Red Sox, the roles at second and third base remain open for competition. Turning 31 on March 23, Kiner-Falefa enters a crowded field that includes potential candidates like Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell, Romy Gonzalez, David Hamilton, and Nick Sogard. Both Kiner-Falefa and Mayer are viewed as leading contenders for the starting positions.
Adding Kiner-Falefa to the mix also helps diversify the Red Sox's batting lineup, which tends to lean heavily towards left-handed hitters.
