The Masked Singer Season 14 Episode 5 Recap: Calla Lily Revealed
SPOILER ALERT: Details follow for Season 14, Episode 5 of The Masked Singer, Red, White and Clue, which aired on February 4th on Fox.
Teddi Mellencamp's journey on The Masked Singer was a transformative experience, pulling her out of a dark place and giving her a renewed sense of purpose. As Calla Lily, she performed Jack and Diane, a song made famous by her father, John Mellencamp, during his John Cougar era. She had previously performed Fight Song by Rachel Platten.
The panelists had varying guesses for her identity. Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg correctly identified Teddi Mellencamp, while Ken Jeong thought it was Christina Applegate, Rita Ora guessed Selma Blair, and Robin Thicke went with Danielle Fishel.
Mellencamp shared her challenges as a non-singer, her skewed memory due to brain surgery, and her excitement to push herself beyond her comfort zone. She decided to join the show because her children recognized her after her first performance, and she sought her father's singing advice.
Mellencamp's recent battle with Stage 4 cancer was a significant part of her story. She discussed her immunotherapy treatment and the emotional impact of her father's comments about her health. In a clue package, she hinted at her health struggles, emphasizing the importance of facing fears and finding strength.
Among the contestants, High Voltage, Owl, Pangolin, and Eggplant advanced to the next round, joining Galaxy Girl, Stingray, Cat Witch, Pugcasso, Snow Cone, and Crane. The unmasked celebrities so far include Claudia Oshry (Queen Corgi), Taraji P. Henson (Scarab), Tone Loc (Handyman), Tiffany Haddish (Le Who Who), Todd and Julie Chrisley (Croissants), and David "Big Papi" Ortiz (Googly Eyes).
The show's host, Nick Cannon, and panelists Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, Rita Ora, and Robin Thicke returned for Season 14. Thicke opened the episode with a performance of James Brown's Living in America.
A new segment, America's Insider, features singer, dancer, and social media personality Kylie Cantrall, who provides behind-the-scenes hints and clues. Cantrall is in costume as Cat Witch but will only unmask for viewers, keeping the panelists in the dark.
The season's themed episodes pay tribute to Star Trek, Clueless, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Twilight Saga. Additionally, the Fear Factor reboot will feature Johnny Knoxville, and Ozzfest Night will honor Ozzy Osbourne with a special tribute by Kelly Osbourne.
