A Call to Action: Addressing the Dangers of Varner Road
In a recent state study, Varner Road in California has been unveiled as one of the state's most perilous roadways. This revelation has sparked urgent action from state, county, and local leaders, who convened at the SunLine Transit Agency headquarters to confront this critical issue.
Varner Road, a 2.3-mile stretch from Bob Hope Drive to Monterey Avenue in the Coachella Valley, has witnessed an alarming number of fatal and serious injury crashes. Between 2019 and 2023, 17 such incidents occurred, resulting in four fatalities and 25 serious injuries. These statistics are a stark reminder of the urgent need for enhanced safety measures.
In response, Varner Road has been designated a "Priority Safety Corridor." This special status empowers agencies to expedite safety improvements, focusing on reducing crashes and serious injuries. The plan includes enhancements to road markings, guardrails, and visibility, with potential improvements to be finalized as early as June.
The identification of these corridors was a collaborative effort between state agencies and UC Berkeley SafeTREC. They utilized a High Injury Network method, analyzing five years of crash data from 2019 to 2023. The sites were chosen based on safety data, contextual factors, and partner readiness.
Success will be measured by a reduction in fatal and serious-injury crashes. Leading indicators, such as vehicle speeds, conflict points, and telematics data, will be closely monitored to detect risks early and guide proactive adjustments.
Interestingly, CVAG, which was also present at the meeting, is already working on improving a 22-mile section of Varner Road known as CV Sync. This initiative further emphasizes the commitment to enhancing road safety in the region.
